How Your Kids Can Enjoy Halloween Without Harming Their Teeth (And What To Do, If They Do)

When should your kids eat their Halloween candy?

Did you grow up with your parents saying dessert could only be had after you ate your dinner? Whether they were aware of it or not, there is actually data to back up this little rule, and you can use it to keep your kids’ teeth healthier.

Tooth enamel can be weakened by bacteria feeding on sugar, but saliva can help wash away excess sugar to prevent this from happening. Eating dinner helps increase saliva production, so when your kids have their candy afterwards, there’s enough saliva in their mouths to help move the sugar from their mouths into their stomachs. Of course, washing it all down with a glass of water will also help!

Are some Halloween candies safer than others?

Absolutely! Not all candies are equally problematic. Chewy, sticky candies are more likely to stick to the enamel of your kids’ teeth, which allows bacteria to thrive. And of course, hard candies are more prone to cause a cracked or broken tooth—especially if your child is in the habit of crunching hard candies instead of sucking on them. However, sucking on hard candies for extended periods increases exposure duration to sugar.

So what candies should you encourage your children to eat? Chocolate is often best as it is eaten quickly and washes away easily. The same goes for powdery candies like Rockets. But if your kid really loves sticky, chewy, or hard candies, just limit the amount they have and do your best to restrict eating them to after dinner.

How can you help your child manage their candy intake?

Leading by example is certainly a great place to start. Beyond that,  here are a few ways you can help limit the candy intake without having to endure tantrums:
